Day 20: Out of the Mouths of Babes...

As a father, there are things that I sometimes worry about. Am I setting a good example for my family? Do my wife and son look to me for help on their walk with God? But one of the more challenging things is discerning how to train my son to become a leader within the church, especially when a seven year old like him is more concerned with Super Mario Bros. and McDonald's Happy Meal toys. But a few weeks ago, he touched my heart.

Usually, my son and I alternate who will say prayers for breakfast, lunch (if we’re together for lunch) dinner, and bedtime. But he must have picked up on some things I had recently added and been praying for, changed it a little for himself, and added them to his list of requests. His prayer:

“Dear God, please watch over us tonight and take care of us tomorrow so we don’t get hurt by people or the devil. Please help us not to hurt others. Please watch over Ms. Elizabeth and help her get better. Please watch over Ms. Bridget, baby Asher, and their whole family; may they grow to love you. Please watch over my mommy and our new baby; may I be a good big brother, and may the baby follow you. Please help the whole world not sin and please help everyone to love you and worship you the right way so we can all live an eternal life with you. Thank you for everything and forgive us when we do bad things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Mark 10:14 “…Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.

Tom...what a beautiful prayer. Your example is powerful!

When I imagine the faces and intense look in the eyes of the disciples when they ask Jesus to teach them to pray, it must have been an amazing moment. Imagine that - Jesus teaching his disciples how to pray. And then I read your writings Tom and I see those moments are perpetuated throughout the centuries by fathers like you. Let us all learn to pray, pray and teach our children to pray! Thanks so much Tom for who you are and who you are raising! (And I know Lisa is a vital part of bring up a praying son too!

Tom, that is a wonderful prayer. You are such a great example to your children.

Scott is such a sweet boy and a lot of that has to do with his sweet parents. My family appreciates the prayer not only because some of it was prayed for our family, but also because since Scott is Addison and Aidan's best friend, I know he is a good influence in their lives. We love you all and are blesed to have you as friends!
