Day 23: Praying in Despair

A little less than two years ago, my wife and I learned we were expecting our first child. Throughout the pregnancy, there were many complications and scares. The doctor had warned us that the pregnancy was very risky, so anytime something happened, we feared the worst.

At the final scheduled doctor’s appointment, the doctor had a look of concern as she was checking the baby’s heartbeat, and she told us we had to get to the hospital immediately. As they quickly rolled my wife to the hospital, there were many things going through my mind. Is the baby OK? Will my wife be OK? Have we made it this far to have it all taken away from us at the last minute?

As we made it to the hospital, the room we were in looked like a scene from the TV show "ER". There were people running around everywhere in the room. They hooked her up to monitors and then immediately rolled her back to the operating room for an emergency C-section with but a second to say "I love you." It was at that moment that I did something I had never done before- I fell to my knees in prayer to God. I had never prayed as emotionally and heartfelt as I did at that moment. Fifteen minutes after being in the doctor’s office, a nurse came (as I was at the admittance desk hurriedly filling out paperwork) and told me that my little girl came out kicking and screaming and that my wife was doing fine. It was at that moment that my view of prayer changed. Now as my daughter gives me goodnight kisses, I realize how much God has blessed me throughout my life. As I pray, I ask for less and am thankful for more, as God has truly blessed me beyond my imagination.

God has blessed each of us more than we deserve. Don’t go to God just when you need Him, but go to him when everything seems perfect because, if it is, God is the one that made it that way. When we truly see how much God has blessed us, we can go to Him as emotionally and heartfelt as we do when we go to Him in despair.

Philippians 4:4-7- “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Scot,

What a wonderful posting. You're right, we serve an amazing, awesome God, who does wonderful things for all of us!

Scot,

That is an amazing story...I can't see the screen through all the tears. God is so good to his children and it is such a joy to watch you and your family grow. I love you like a son, but God loves you so much more. It is amazing.
